How does HiWire get paid?

HiWire Financial is paid by the insurance company that issues the contract, and that payment does not reduce the amount you pay into the annuity.

No

Does the commission come out of the money I put in?

Insurance companies usually pay the annuity salesperson after the sale, and the payment doesn't reduce the amount you pay into the annuity. The premium you pay goes into the contract in full, and the carrier pays the producer separately.

No

Is there a fee to talk to a HiWire specialist?

A conversation with a HiWire specialist carries no fee, and neither does anything that follows from it short of placing a contract. That covers calls, the quotes a specialist pulls across carriers, the comparison of those quotes, and a review of a contract you already own and did not buy through HiWire. If you go through all of it and decide to do nothing, you owe nothing.

No

Does HiWire hold my money?

HiWire does not take custody of client funds. Money moves from you to the insurance company that issues the contract, and the contract is between you and that company.

Does HiWire sell my information?

HiWire does not sell your data. When you request a quote from our site, you will only ever be contacted by HiWire Financial and their annuity specialists. Our expertise is in selling annuities, not leads, so you can count on the fact that your information stays with us. We will have to share your information with the annuity carrier in order to obtain quotes and contracts.

What happens if an annuity is not the right answer for me?

Sometimes an annuity is not the right answer, and our specialist can discuss this with you if they see a poor fit between your goals and our products. The three situations we see the most that prevent a good fit are: the money is likely to be needed sooner than the contract allows; the money is your accessible reserve; or you are looking for full market exposure. Annuities are designed for specific goals, often income stability rather than aggressive growth.

What happens if I change my mind after buying?

In many states the law gives a set number of days, usually 10 to 30, to change your mind about buying an annuity after you receive it, often called a "Free Look" period. The length varies by state but will be included on your contract. The Free Look period is one of the strongest forms of consumer protection and a valuable piece to understand.

After that period, a surrender or withdrawal charge usually applies if money is taken out before a set time period ends, and the percentage usually goes down each year until the surrender charge period ends. Withdrawals are generally subject to ordinary income tax and a 10% federal penalty if taken before age 59 1/2.

What should I ask before buying an annuity through anyone?

Nine questions worth asking before you sign anything, regardless if you are buying from us or not. They are the ones that surface the terms people most often find out about later.

  1. What type of annuity is this, in plain terms?
  2. What is my free-look period, and what is the exact date it ends?
  3. What is the surrender schedule, year by year, in writing?
  4. Is there a penalty-free withdrawal amount each year, and how much?
  5. What other annuity types did you consider for me, and why did you rule them out?
  6. What is the insurance company's financial strength rating, and who issued it?
  7. What happens to this money if I die during the surrender period?
  8. Is the rate fixed for the full term, or can it change? If it can change, who decides, and how often?
  9. What is the worst realistic outcome for me if I need this money earlier than planned?
